Trial by Fire at the Warhound Arena
The stone staircase twisted downward, the air growing thick with dust and heat. Ribbitz and Gorr moved cautiously, their shadows stretching long against the flickering torchlight.
As they stepped onto solid ground, the tunnel widened, and suddenly opened into a massive underground colosseum.
They had arrived at the Warhound Arena.
The place was carved straight from the volcanic rock, torches lining the jagged walls. Massive chains hung from above, rattling softly in the hot air. On the far end, ancient stone doors were sealed shut, covered in symbols of warriors locked in battle.
Gorr clenched his fists. Yeah, I don’t like this.
Ribbitz smirked, taking a slow pull from his cigar. What, this ain’t your scene?
Before Gorr could respond, a thunderous voice echoed through the arena.
CHALLENGERS HAVE ENTERED THE PIT. THE TRIAL BEGINS.
BOOM.
The ground shook violently as two of the massive stone doors began to grind open. Dust billowed from the entrance, and from within came a deep, guttural growl.
A pair of glowing red eyes emerged first.
Then the rest of it.
A monstrous, armored beast stomped forward, a Warhound, twice the size of Gorr, clad in ancient battle-worn plating. Its metal-clad paws crushed the stone beneath it. Chains dangled from its thick neck, dragging behind it like remnants of past battles.
Its jaws snapped open, revealing rows of jagged fangs.
Then, it charged.
Gorr barely dodged to the side as the Warhound barreled past, slamming into a stone pillar with enough force to crack it.
Ribbitz rolled his shoulders, cracking his knuckles. Aight, guess we see what we’re made of.
The Warhound turned, snarling, its chains rattling.
Gorr snorted. You got a plan?
Ribbitz exhaled smoke. Yeah. We don’t lose.
