There are already a handful of promising wallet-to-wallet messaging services that have launched. Here's a list of the ones I'm using and keeping an eye on:
XMTP is the messaging solution with the most adoption. It powers DMs in many Lens Protocol apps. It's an open network with features like wallet-based authentication, private e2e encrypted messaging, and compatibility with all EVMs.
XMTP Labs is funded by a16z Crypto and Coinbase Ventures. Nodes are currently closed source, off-chain, and centralized. Decentralization is planned and usage is free.
A cross-chain chat solution, from Push Protocol, with e2e encryption, group chat, and support for text, GIFs, and images.
Messages are stored on IPFS and the SDK is open source, but nodes are closed source and the network is centralized. Decentralization is on the roadmap.
Push Protocol is funded by Binance Labs, Polygon Studio, and A.Capital. The launch partner is Polygon Wallet. Usage is free.
Blockscan Chat is a basic messaging app from the Etherscan team. It has wallet-based authentication, works with any EVM, and chats are e2e encrypted. Usage is free but it's closed source, off-chain, and centralized with no plans to decentralize.
While positioning itself as an email alternative, Ethermail is still wallet-to-wallet messaging at it's core. One of the standout features is the Inbox Paywall, which allows you to charge third-parties for sending you email.
EtherMail is closed source and has no plans for decentralization. Usage is free.

Why so many closed source if the plan is to open source? Are they just trying to get a head start?
