Elizabeth Langstaff was recruited to Bletchley Park from Newnham College, Cambridge. Her first role at Bletchley Park, from October 1939 to April 1940, was in Hut 5, where she coded messages to be sent to London, preparing them for transmission by radio or mounted messenger.
She was then transferred to Hut 3, where her fluency in German was invaluable. Her job was to type German messages from the raw decryptions, interpret the abbreviations, and file the results. The resulting information was then to be forwarded to the relevant offices in London in a form suggesting a source other than the Enigma machine decryption.
By 1943, Langstaff had become the personal assistant to the head of Hut 3, Eric Jones. In an interview, she confided that, while she enjoyed her job, she derived even more satisfaction from her participation in the Recreational Club Drama Group. Pursuing a passion born during her university years, she became the club's secretary and participated in several productions, acting, singing, and dancing enthusiastically.
