took around 2,200 men five years to build the power station
Turning on the power
We don't often welcome rain on a holiday, but we do need it!
Loch Sloy Hydro-electric Power Station is the largest of its kind in the UK and provides the National Park with a sustainable source of electricity. It's an unmistakeable sight on the shores of Loch Lomond.
Hydro-electric power can be used when there's a sudden demand for electricity. Water is stored in Loch Sloy until extra power is needed. Then valves are opened and the water rushes down a 3 km tunnel through Ben Vorlich, turning the turbines and generating electricity. It was 'switched on' for the first time in, 1950.
Loch Lomond is much easier to see when you get off the road.
