"Basalt pillars". Rivne region. Polesie. Ukraine.
Unique accumulations of basalt rocks. Basalt pillars are igneous rock broken by cracks into columnar formations characteristic of basalt. Stones were mined here, which were then used to pave the squares of Paris and Vienna, Brussels and Warsaw, Red Square in Moscow. Some quarries are flooded and, in combination with the turquoise transparent water, the stone columns look especially picturesque and majestic.
