Chapter 11: Faster Than Fear

The Warhound lunged

a blur of metal, muscle, and fury, its charge aimed straight for Ribbitz. But he was already on the move.

In a flash, Ribbitz sidestepped, and the beast’s momentum carried it crashing into the stone wall. The impact sent tremors through the arena, tiny fissures spreading across the volcanic floor.

Gorr rolled to the side, exclaiming, That hit like a runaway freight train!

Ribbitz’s focus was unbreakable. As the Warhound recovered and turned with a snarl, its chains clattered against the floor. This wasn’t the usual harsh clank of metal, there was a peculiar, almost hollow note to it, as if something deep down was slightly off balance.

Ribbitz’s eyes narrowed behind his dark lenses. There’s something in the way these chains sound, but we don’t have time to overthink it, he muttered.

The beast charged once more, faster, more desperate. Ribbitz danced around it with blinding speed, each maneuver leaving the Warhound a bit more off-kilter. With a final burst of agility, Ribbitz led the creature into one last overzealous lunge. The Warhound stumbled and toppled, its armored bulk crashing to the side in a controlled collapse.

Silence fell. Dust settled. Gorr exhaled deeply, Well, that was something.

Ribbitz, catching his breath, lingered on the sound of those chains. There was a faint, mysterious resonance, a whisper of an echo that hinted at more beneath the surface. It was a subtle, almost unnoticeable irregularity, but in that moment, it planted a seed of curiosity.
