April 12, 1961

🚀 Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin launched in the Vostok 1 space capsule. This was the first time man had ever been into space. Must have been very exciting! I would also think, a bit terrifying. But, back in the day, no brave military man would be caught dead saying that. Especially not a Russian. In fact, my astronaut friend, Mike Mullane, has a saying that he jokes around with….”Better off dead than look bad”. 😂

👩🏼‍🚀 Gagarin traveled in orbit for 108 minutes before re-entering the atmosphere and ejecting to float down with a parachute.
