If you're not familiar with thorchain, it allows you to swap btc directly to eth, stablecoins, avax, doge, etc. without ever using a centralized exchange.

Interested to hear @Hpayne's thoughts on this. His app, shapeshift uses thorchain in the background.

hmm--that is certainly strange indeed!

I think Familiar Cow has a pretty interesting answer on the THORChain side regarding: black swan events that might disrupt THORChain (like some sort of weird regulation event or something happening to Chad) and if/how the network will recover. Re: frontends, I can only speak to ShapeShift (as it's the project I am currently working with 😁). We have always aimed to stay true to our values of providing users with a truly permissionless, multichain, private, and self-custodial platform to buy, sell, track, trade and earn with their assets. 

Since app.shapeshift.com is open-source and on IPFS (and abiding by all known general laws to the best of our ability), I think we are somewhat sufficiently decentralized and set up to handle/respond to whatever might happen.

One thing that is going for us right now is that app.shapeshift.com (unlike other front ends) does NOT charge fees to use THORChain (its crazy that people use other places that charge 30 bps and just don't bat an eye). There are plans in the long-run to add fees, but in the meantime, no fees gives us a little more protection (or so we like to think) 😅🤣
