Jacqueline Nyetipei Kiplimo did something that stunned the world during the 2010 Zheng Kai Marathon when she saw a disabled competitor, a double amputee, struggling to drink water.
Instead of using that moment to outpace the struggling athlete, she ran alongside him from 10 kilometers to 38 kilometers, helping him drink water at every aid station. The compassionate assistance she provided slowed her race time and caused her to lose her first-place finish, relegating her to second—costing her the victory and the $10,000 prize.
Jacqueline Nyetipei Kiplimo showed the world that, for her, compassion and helping others were more important than winning a race she had spent her entire life preparing for. This is what a true leader looks like: someone who never gives up on a person with a disability. ❤️
