If you've ever worked professionally with me, you'll know I always encourage my teams to turn on their video cams.
Why?
I'm a firm believer that a significant amount of information gets lost when we can't see facial expressions.
This is especially important when you're dealing with managers and their direct reports.
Take this statement for example:
"I'm not sure that will work."
Uhhhh....that could mean so many things:
- "I don't like the idea." - "I like it but I don't think I can sell it to my colleagues." - "I'm not convinced yet, but tell me more." - "Drop the subject now, or you're really going to annoy me."
93% of communication is nonverbal, and so true intent can easily become misconstrued without more context.
