During the Vietnam War, John Steinbeck was sent to Vietnam to write a series of reports for Newsday, which he wrote as letters to his friend, and also Newsday's publisher and editor, Alicia Patterson. When he flew with UH-1 Huey pilots in January of 1967, Steinbeck wrote the attached letter.
