Syrian authorities are demanding that Russia hand over former dictator Bashar al-Assad in the course of negotiations over Russian military bases in the country, Reuters report.

Assad fled to Moscow when HTS rebels mounted their quick, successful offensive at the end of 2024.

The new Syrian administration also emphasized that to restore relations, Russia must address past mistakes and respect the Syrian people's will. However, a Syrian source told Reuters that Russia refused to acknowledge any mistakes, with the only agreement being to continue discussions.
