April 5th is World Conscience Day, a date proclaimed by the UN in 2019, which aims to promote global awareness, beyond political or economic agreements.

What is the awareness to which this international day refers?
The UN calls on governments, social actors, and people in general to promote a Culture of Peace with Love and Conscience. What do they mean by the word "conscience"?

Conscience is difficult to explain because of its abstract nature. If we look at the etymology of the word, it comes from the Latin conscientia ("with knowledge"). This means that the word "conscience" refers to what the subject or human being knows.

But the United Nations expands the meaning of this word to a more social perspective. It is about protecting future generations from wars, and ensuring that human beings act with the values ​​of justice, democracy, solidarity, and human rights.

It's about each and every person, but also societies and governments, acting guided by the values ​​of peace and love. A collective consciousness that must be forged in each and every one of us.

Is a consciousness of peace and love possible in the world?

Explained like this, the concept seems a bit utopian, but the UN aims to promote this culture to spread this change in consciousness throughout the world.

To promote this idea, educational, cultural, social, and civic activities are necessary, aimed at all ages and all social groups, so that everyone has the opportunity to give, learn, and share.

It's about making the culture of peace inseparable from culture itself. And this requires a great deal of strategy.

How COVID-19 Revealed a Global Consciousness
The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic unleashed across the world between 2019 and 2020 has taught everyone that there is a culture of solidarity with the sole objective of the common good.

Many countries ordered lockdowns for their fellow citizens, who had to abandon all social, work, and recreational activities, with the sole objective of stopping the global pandemic that was causing the deaths of tens of thousands of people and relieving healthcare systems of pressure they had never been under in the modern era.

The response of millions of people around the world, staying home and respecting the rules decreed by authorities for the sake of the common good, has demonstrated that there is undoubtedly a consciousness greater than each of us.

Background to the Culture of Peace
The concept of a culture of peace emerged at the International Congress on "Peace in the Minds of Men," organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Côte d'Ivoire in July 1989.

But going further, we find its origins in the UNESCO Constitution, adopted more than 50 years ago, which calls on the organization to demand the foundations of peace in the minds of men.
